The Top 10 Box-Office Collections of the year 2011.
1. KO
Ko collected 5 crore during its first two days of screening. In Chennai, it collected 73.39 lakhs in the opening weekend. After 9 weeks, it collected 7.99 crore in Chennai.28 Ko successfully completed 100 days and declared as a "Blockbuster" hit by trade and media.
The film, made on a budget of 15 crore is estimated to have grossed over 50 crore.
The Telugu version, Rangam was also declared successful, with distributors organizing celebrations in Tirupati on its 100th day of theatrical run.
2. Mankatha
The film opened at second rank in Malaysia, grossing $803,666 in its first weekend,with a per screen average of $19,602(Highest per screen average). claiming the second-highest opening weekend for a Tamil film.
After 4 weeks, the film has collected 6 crores in Malaysia alone. In the United Kingdom, the film grossed $179,054 from 16 screens, opening at 16th rank, gaining the third-highest per-screen-average-rate ($11,191).
Overall the film had collected $1,104,911 in Malaysia in 6 weeks, and $268,533 in UK at the end of the third week.
Mankatha had one of the biggest ever opening that the film industry has seen thus far next to Enthiran and dasavatharam.
This film also earned its lead star Ajith a new title – Emperor of the Box Office. Mankatha overall collection released by sun pictures is around 130crore and the tv rights are yet to be sold.
3. Kanchana
Kanchana emerged 2011's most successful Tamil film based on ROI (return on investment).
It was made on a budget of 8.5 crores, including publicity cost of 1.5 crores, while its Telugu dubbing rights were sold to Bellamkonde Suresh for 4 crores. The film is expected to gross 15 to 20 Crores in Tamil Nadu only at the end of its run.
4. Velayutham
Velayutham took a big opening on Diwali day and was declared a box office success. The film topped the regional box office despite opening with less prints than 7aum Arivu, forcing the producers to release more prints.
In its opening weekend, spanning five days, the film grossed 2.10 crore (US$399,000) crore in Chennai city alone. According to trade sources, the film grossed 19 crore (US$3.61 million) in Tamil Nadu and around 40 crore (US$7.6 million) during the first weekend worldwide from 850 screens.
On October 28, two days after its release, Vijay, Vijay Antony and director Raja met the press at a hotel in Chennai to celebrate the success of the film.
The total collections in chennai is 7.74 crore (US$1.47 million) crore after a good run at the box-office for 6 weeks. Overseas, Velayudham was a relatively high grosser in Europe and North America, with Taran Adarsh, a Bollywood film critic highlighting that the film was "rocking internationally".
The film in its five-days extended weekend had collected $107,843 in UK, as the film featured at 20th position in the UK Box Office with a per screen average of $6,344 (third highest)
5. 7am Arivu
The movie got average collection. Movie was released in Telugu and Tamil versions at once.Due to mixed rexponse and victory of velayudham over 7aum arivu it has collected 79.4 crores worldwide.This film was considered as an average film at box office.
6. Engeyum Eppothum
The film released in 150 theaters across Tamil Nadu. Made on a budget of 5 crore (US$0.95 million), the film saw good return on investment grossing around 20 crore (US$3.8 million). Buoyed by its success, the makers released the film in Telugu on a bigger scale as Journey on December 16. The telugu dubbing rights of the movie was acquired by producer Suresh Kondeti.
Telugu version journey also opened to very positive reviews and the producer planned to release the movie in additional 35 theatres in Andhra pradesh.
7. Aadukalam
Aadukalam was made under a budget of 15 crore (US$2.85 million). It was released widely with attractive promotions by Sun Pictures. The movie attracted the audience for it's fresh script and storytelling way. Aadukalam collected around 30 crore (US$5.7 million) and was decalred as a Hit.
The film won six awards at the 58th National Film Awards. Besides, the film was also screened at several film festivals such as Toronto Film Festival,17 Montreal Film Festival and Mumbai International Film Festival.
8. Deiva Thirumagal
In Chennai, the film collected 80 lakhs in the first three days with around 100% occupancy in theaters. After one week, the collections were around 2.53 crore with the average occupancy being 90%. After six weeks, it had collected 7.01 crore from Chennai and was declared a "hit" by trade pundits
9. Siruthai
Siruthai was made under a budget of 11 crore (US$2.09 million). It was released by Studio Green K.E Gnanavel Raja and it was their home production. The movie had all the commercial elements and drawn family audience to the theater. Siruthai collected around 40 crore (US$7.6 million) and was decalred as a Hit.
10. Yuddham Sei
The film was a commercial success grossing over $2million at the box office in 5 weeks. Even though the film dealed with sensitive and serious subject, it was received well by family audience.
